{"id":180,"date":"2012-09-25T21:07:32","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T02:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triplescomputers.com\/blog\/?p=180"},"modified":"2012-09-25T21:08:58","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T02:08:58","slug":"solution-services-msc-blank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/casestudies\/solution-services-msc-blank\/","title":{"rendered":"Solution: Services.msc blank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This particular issue is one which most seasoned techs have dealt with time and time again. \u00a0Most of the time, it&#8217;s simply the Extended tab which is blank, showing nothing but a strange fractured blue border. \u00a0In this case, the traditional solution is actually quite easy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>On XP:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Start<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Run<\/strong> &gt; type\u00a0<strong>cmd\u00a0<\/strong>and press ENTER<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>On Vista\/7:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Start\u00a0<\/strong>&gt; in the\u00a0<em>Start Search\u00a0<\/em>box, type\u00a0<strong>cmd<\/strong>, then right-click\u00a0<strong>Command Prompt\u00a0<\/strong>and choose\u00a0<strong>Run As Administrator<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>At the <em>Command Prompt<\/em> window which appears, type\u00a0<strong>regsvr32.exe jscript.dll<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Still at the\u00a0<em>Command Prompt<\/em>, type\u00a0<strong>regsvr32.exe vbscript.dll<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Reboot.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That fixes the problem most of the time. \u00a0But recently, I encountered an entirely different cause for the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting straight to the chase, a\u00a0<strong>damaged IE9 installation\u00a0<\/strong>can also be to blame. \u00a0Many of the same files involved in IE&#8217;s operation are also used to display the contents of this particular MMC snap-in. \u00a0The solution normally is to simply repair (uninstall, reinstall) IE9. \u00a0Be sure to check your progress after each step to ensure your actions don&#8217;t accidentally resurrect the problem however; on\u00a0<em>yet another\u00a0<\/em>machine where I ran into this recently, even\u00a0<em>reinstalling\u00a0<\/em>IE9 caused the problem to recur.<\/p>\n<p>Technically speaking, for security reasons alone, it&#8217;s always a good idea to have the latest version of IE installed, because it&#8217;s a pretty deeply-seated Windows component (whether or not you actually use Internet Explorer as your browser). \u00a0In some rare cases, however, troubleshooting this sort of thing can become too cumbersome to warrant the time involved. \u00a0In my case, I eventually simply left IE8 installed, performed all available patches, and then blocked access to the app via the Default Programs dialog. \u00a0Not perfect, but problem solved nonetheless!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This particular issue is one which most seasoned techs have dealt with time and time again. \u00a0Most of the time, it&#8217;s simply the Extended tab which is blank, showing nothing but a strange fractured blue border. \u00a0In this case, the &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/casestudies\/solution-services-msc-blank\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[121,86,117,123,119,120,124,118,122,104],"class_list":["post-180","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-casestudies","tag-blank","tag-dll-files","tag-internet-explorer","tag-jscript-dll","tag-microsoft-management-console","tag-mmc","tag-regsvr32","tag-services","tag-services-msc","tag-vbscript-dll"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=180"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=180"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=180"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=180"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
