This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn&#8217;t respond.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The System Event Log also logs an event regarding the service timing out. \u00a0When attempting to stop\/restart\/configure the service, none of the options are available; they&#8217;re merely greyed out, though the service is present.<\/p>\n<p>The solution is pretty simple:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 15px;\">Change the permissions on the relevant keys configuring the Group Policy Client service to allow Full Control to Administrators.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Open\u00a0<strong>regedit <\/strong>(Start &gt; type <strong>regedit\u00a0<\/strong>in the search box)\u00a0and navigate to:<br \/>\n<strong>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\services\\gpsvc<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Right-click the registry key and choose <strong>Permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Advanced<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>then click <strong>Owner<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Administrators<\/strong> and check the\u00a0<strong>Replace owner on subcontainers and objects<\/strong> box.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the permissions dialog and then open it again.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Advanced<\/strong>, then choose\u00a0<strong>Administrators<\/strong> and click <strong>Edit&#8230;<\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Check\u00a0<strong>Allow\u00a0<\/strong>underneath\u00a0<strong>Full Control<\/strong>, then click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check\u00a0<strong>Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object<\/strong>. \u00a0Click OK and confirm; exit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Download the default gpsvc configuration information corresponding to your version of Windows:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/download.bleepingcomputer.com\/win-services\/vista\/gpsvc.reg\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Vista<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/download.bleepingcomputer.com\/win-services\/7\/gpsvc.reg\" target=\"_blank\">Windows 7<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/download.bleepingcomputer.com\/win-services\/8\/gpsvc.reg\" target=\"_blank\">Windows 8<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Back at the Registry Editor window, click\u00a0<strong>File\u00a0<\/strong>&gt; <strong>Import&#8230;<\/strong> and choose the .reg file you downloaded above.<\/li>\n<li>Merge the changes with the registry. \u00a0Reboot.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Problem solved!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under specific circumstances, I&#8217;ve encountered this message following a reboot on systems I am repairing\/setting up: Failed to connect to a Windows service Windows could not connect to the Group Policy Client service.
