&#8220;Class not registered&#8221; when trying to open Chrome in Windows 8.1\/10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I have been seeing an increased incidence of this particular issue on newer Windows 8\/8.1\/10 machines. \u00a0It occurs when the user attempts to launch Chrome via\u00a0any shortcut on the Desktop, taskbar, or elsewhere, or when opening any file or protocol (URL, etc.) associated with Chrome. \u00a0The only permanent &#8220;solution&#8221; is to create a direct shortcut to the Chrome.exe executable in the %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\\Google\\Chrome\\Application directory and then launch it from there. \u00a0However, this doesn&#8217;t fix the problems with trying to open .HTML files and URL links from other applications, which still trigger the error.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of suggestions abound across the internet regarding ways to temporarily correct this problem. \u00a0Most of them center on the deletion of the Chrome Classes registry keys\u00a0affiliated with the file\/protocol associations, but these are only temporary; the problem resurfaces each and every time Chrome updates itself, which happens a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, there seems to be a much easier solution. \u00a0Bear in mind that I have only thus far tried this on\u00a0<em>one\u00a0<\/em>machine, but it worked immediately, and it jives with other research I&#8217;ve done on related subjects. \u00a0Please let me know in the comments if this solution also works for you.<\/p>\n<p>The fix?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Uninstall Java (all versions).<\/li>\n<li>Uninstall Chrome.<\/li>\n<li>Reboot.<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall Chrome.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This corrected the problem completely on my user&#8217;s machine. \u00a0It may or may not work for you; if it doesn&#8217;t, try one of these other\u00a0solutions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open <strong>regedit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Delete (if present) the following registry keys:\n<ol>\n<li>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\Wow6432Node\\CLSID\\{5C65F4B0-3651-4514-B207-D10CB699B14B}<\/li>\n<li>HKLM\\Software\\Classes\\Chrome<\/li>\n<li>HKLM\\Software\\Classes\\ChromeHTML\\open\\command\\DelegateExecute<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Reboot.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open\u00a0<strong>Default Programs\u00a0<\/strong>and set a different browser temporarily to default (for example, IE).<\/li>\n<li>Open Chrome and choose to set it as default when automatically prompted.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Hopefully this helps someone else struggling with this problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I have been seeing an increased incidence of this particular issue on newer Windows 8\/8.1\/10 machines. \u00a0It occurs when the user attempts to launch Chrome via\u00a0any shortcut on the Desktop, taskbar, or elsewhere, or when opening any file or &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/casestudies\/solution-class-not-registered-when-trying-to-open-chrome-in-windows-8-1windows-10\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[181,3],"tags":[201,202,73,84,55,203,8],"class_list":["post-407","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-application-troubleshooting","category-casestudies","tag-chrome","tag-defaults","tag-error-messages","tag-errors","tag-google-chrome","tag-java","tag-registry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/407","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=407"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/407\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=407"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=407"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.triplescomputers.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=407"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
